Joel Edgerton is in early talks to join Jennifer Lawrence in Fox’s spy thriller “Red Sparrow.” Frances Lawrence is directing the film which Fox has already dated for Nov. 10, 2017.

The film is based on the Jason Matthews novel of the same name. Justin Haythe re-wrote the script, originally by Eric Warren Singer. Steve Zaillian is producing with Chernin Entertainment and Garrett Basch is exec produer.

The book is set in modern-day Russia in the intelligence bureaucracy with a young woman drafted against her will to become a “sparrow,” a trained seductress assigned to operate against a first-tour CIA officer who handles the agency’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers fall into a spiral of attraction and deception that results in her leading life as a double agent.
