Has Jennifer Lawrence’s sweetness finally curdled?! After winning the Best Actress Academy Award last year for her turn in Silver Linings Playbook, the beloved, fun-loving star, 23, was up for yet another trophy this year in the Best Supporting Actress category for American Hustle — but, despite what many considered neck-to-neck odds, 12 Years a Slave’s Lupita Nyong’o triumphed instead.

And backstage, Lawrence, naturally, played up her loss and the battle-of-the-ingenues angle, grabbing Nyong’o’s golden statue as both stunning women pretended to fight over the Oscar.

Indisputably this award season’s breakout star, Nyong’o, 31, was emotional and poisedas ever when she accepted her award. “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s,” the Prada-clad newcomer said of her harrowing portrayal. “And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. . . When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from your dreams are valid.”

Lawrence, meanwhile, still had plenty of moments in the spotlight anyway — tripping yet again outside the L.A. Theatre and presenting the Best Picture award, which went to 12 Years a Slave.
